Having a pet at home is always a tonne of fun! However, for some people, it is also a few extra sneezes. If you are allergic to dogs, then living with this cute ball of fur can be extremely challenging. But by following a few simple tips, you can manage to have a quite peaceful life without any one of you having to relocate!
What is allergy?
The human body is an extremely complicated system. Among all those things that it does, one of its functions is to defend itself, and it is supposed to protect us from viruses, bacteria, and other types of invaders. The problem is that sometimes this system becomes a bit over the top with respect to certain circumstances and ends up defending us against things that are not really threatening our well-being.
This is known as an allergy-an exaggerated and abnormal reaction to a foreign element. In this type of reaction, there are no rules: some could be born with an allergy to some kinds of food, others to medication, and others to dogs.
However, experts point out that an exaggerated reaction can also occur. Some people show the first symptoms of allergies to cats and dogs even as adults.
What causes dog allergies?
If someone asks you what causes dog allergies, most people will probably answer without thinking twice: dog hair . This answer, however, is only partially correct.
Specialists, however say that fur is somewhat the cause of allergic reactions, but it is not the root of animal allergies . It is called an allergen and it is actually a kind of protein expelled by the pet.
Besides being present in the fur of the dog, it is present in the saliva, urine, and even in invisible particles. Therefore, allergic reactions also take place when the dog is shaved. This factor makes this problem a little more complicated. But nothing that a little care and good will can’t overcome!
Dog Allergy Symptoms
If you have ever experienced an allergic response, you will likely be able to identify the signs of a dog or cat allergy. So are they consistently the same? What symptoms indicate an allergy to dogs? Some research indicate that certain responses occur more often. They are as follows:
- Itchy throat and nose: This may be one of the first signs that your body is detecting an invader, whether it’s an allergy to dog hair or another factor;
- Dry cough: A cough also indicates that there is something bothering your immune system;
- Sneezing: a classic allergy symptom, sneezing comes next;
- Stuffy, itchy nose: For those who suffer from regular allergies, a stuffy nose is always a problem. If it starts to itch and run, the allergy is attacking;
- Red and irritated eyes: in addition to the respiratory system, the eyes also tend to react to dog allergies,
- Asthma and difficulty breathing: in more severe cases, a person with a cat or dog allergy may show signs of asthma and difficulty breathing.
Naturally, this implies that if someone experiences these symptoms, they should take a shower, attempt to change into clean clothes, and go to a place with good ventilation that is distant from the allergen. However, what occurs if the allergy becomes your closest friend? How do you proceed? Here are some suggestions that could be useful!
How to avoid dog allergies
Some tips may help if one has a dog at home and wants to avoid some symptoms. It is always important to point out the consultation with a doctor.
- A severe allergic reaction can be very problematic, in some cases even needing to be treated with immediate medical attention. Do nothing without first visiting an allergist and discussing the possibilities and medication.
- Dog-free area: This is, in fact suggested by all owners, but this is more important for the people allergic to them. Ideally, there should be some place in your house where your furry friend is not welcomed. Ideally, the bedroom and bed should be out of reach from your pet.
- Clean frequently: allergies to animal hair may not be the main cause of an allergic reaction, but hair is usually the main culprit. To avoid frequent attacks, it is recommended to clean regularly, preferably with a vacuum cleaner. This way, you can keep the environment free of these dreaded allergens.
- After playtime, it’s bath time : even if you keep the entire environment clean, your friend will still be a walking ball of fur, carrying a lot of energy and, unfortunately, a lot of allergens.
To avoid more persistent attacks, it is recommended to always wash yourself after a few moments of interaction. Be prepared to take a shower or, at the very least, wash your hands and face thoroughly. This will reduce the signs of allergy a little.
Remember that these procedures should always be taken under the supervision of a doctor. If symptoms change or worsen, avoid contact with your pet and seek help.
Low allergy breeds
For those who are allergic to dogs but still dream of having a furry best friend, there are a few options. In 2009, the world watched as then-President of the United States Barack Obama gave his daughter, who was allergic to dogs, a Water Dog, a breed known for shedding very little hair.
In addition to this, other recommended breeds are:
- Bichon Frise;
- Schnauzer;
- Maltese;
- Bedlington terrier,
- Mexican Naked.
This does not mean that these breeds do not cause allergies, just that the symptoms tend to be milder, since they shed less hair, the main villains in the story. Regardless of the pet you choose, it is important to take care of your health and the well-being of your friend.
If you have very strong allergic reactions, you probably won’t be able to give your four-legged friend the attention they need. The best thing to do is seek medical help so that everyone can live together peacefully.
